What is coaching?

You might be asking yourself this question around about now. My favourite description of coaching is that it originates from the old meaning of the word ‘coaching’. Where coaches (large buses) were used as vehicles to transport people from one place to another. Coaching can be  a powerful method for helping you get from where you are in life currently to where you want to be.

Coaching is a supportive role, a coach guides, encourages, asks questions, listens deeply and uses a range of tools and methods to uncover not only your deepest desires and dreams but also to find out what obstacles and opportunities you have at your disposal. I I dd

Another useful method of defining coaching is looking at what it is not. The difference between coaching and therapy is that while coaching supports general life situations, improving performance and creating beneficial results. Whereas therapy will usually focus on specific, larger problems or past traumas, mental illness, etc.,

A useful separation is also found in that therapy often focuses on the past whereas coaching is looking forward, looking towards where you want to be, what you want to achieve, removing boundaries, removing obstacles and limitations, stimulating action and real life change.

I think my favourite part about coaching is that it is action-based. Undertaking coaching is saying that you want change. Coaching brings you out of the realm of possibility and into the reality of your situation. It helps you find the next right step and can provide you with the tools, motivation and drive you need to get there.

If you are serious about taking ownership for your life and developing awareness about who you are and what you really desire your future to look like. If you are ready to be the main character of your life and not just a supporting role. If you are ready to take action. Then coaching might be just the thing for you!
